Frequently Asked Questions
What does Homie do?
Listing everything Homie can do would take too long for one answer. While we're working on documenting all the features, here are some key functionalities: it acts as a search engine for your project and code, creates tasks in Slack, generates PR summaries in GitHub/Gitlab, explains PRs and bug fixes, writes changelogs, detects potential duplicate tasks, and sends summaries of PRs and contributors.
Why do we need Homie if we already have existing tools?
The simple answer is that there's always room for improvement. Homie is designed to be opt-in and unobtrusive, fitting seamlessly into your team's existing workflow. Even if you don't use all its features, just a few of them can save your team hundreds of dollars in engineering hours each month.
Won’t AI make things up?
This is a valid concern! Since large language models (LLMs) are statistical in nature, they can sometimes give inconsistent responses. However, most of Homie's features rely on hard-coded function calls, with the AI serving mainly as a chat interface.
How can we trust you with our code and projects?
I understand this is a big concern. My name is Mike, the creator of Homie. I'm a dad of three, a freelance developer from Australia, currently living in Japan. I created Homie to help with my own client work, and I’m using it in over three projects, supporting more than 20 engineers. I'll keep maintaining and improving it, even if I’m the only user. Feel free to learn more about me on X or GitHub, or email me at mike@homie.gg if you'd like to chat.
Can’t we build this ourselves?
You definitely can, and it might even be fun. However, over the years, I've seen how internal tools often get neglected as the product takes priority. Sometimes, they’re abandoned when the original author leaves the company. By using an external service like Homie, you avoid these issues, allowing your team to stay focused on the product.
Who should not use Homie?
While Homie can benefit most development teams, it may not be necessary if you already have dedicated Project Managers and Coordinators. Additionally, if your team operates under strict security or privacy requirements that mandate all third-party providers adhere to specific standards, Homie might not be the best fit.
