AITable.ai review: unlimited seats and an open-source core

By: AI Collection

At a glance

4.0 / 5

Airtable's pricing has a quiet catch: it charges per editor. Invite the whole team into a shared base and the bill climbs with every seat, even for people who only tidy a few rows now and then. AITable.ai is built around the opposite idea. Its paid tiers hand you unlimited seats for a flat monthly price, and the whole thing sits on top of an open-source database engine you can read, fork, or self-host. That combination is the reason it keeps showing up on lists of Airtable alternatives, and it is the lens this review looks through.

What AITable.ai actually is

Underneath the marketing, AITable.ai is the hosted, AI-flavored version of APITable, an API-oriented low-code database platform built by APITable Ltd. The open-source core is public on GitHub, where it carries an AGPL-3.0 license and more than 15,600 stars. The repository lists aitable.ai as its homepage, so the relationship is direct rather than a loose fork: the cloud product is the company's own commercial layer on the engine it maintains in the open.

Day to day, it behaves like a spreadsheet that thinks it is a database. You get typed columns, linked records, and the usual set of views: grid, kanban, gallery, calendar, gantt, and a mind-map-style layout. Forms are a first-class feature, with one-click generation you can embed on a site to collect leads or structured data. Automations fire on events such as a form submission, sending a Slack message or an email without any code. For anything beyond the built-in actions, AITable leans on external automation platforms, connecting to what it advertises as 6,000+ apps through Zapier, Make, Pabbly, Activepieces, and albato.

The pricing angle, and its one asterisk

Pricing is where AITable makes its clearest case. There are four tiers: a free plan, Starter at $22 a month, Plus at $46, and Pro at $92 when billed monthly, dropping to $18, $39, and $79 a month on annual billing. The headline is that Plus and Pro come with unlimited seats, so a growing team is not punished for adding collaborators. For a department that mostly needs a shared, structured place to track work, paying a flat rate instead of a per-person one can change the math considerably.

The asterisk: the entry-level Starter plan caps you at two seats, so the unlimited-seat benefit only kicks in once you reach Plus. The differences between tiers otherwise come down to limits you would expect from this kind of tool, such as records per table, attachment storage, API request rates, and how many automations and AI credits you get. If seat count is your main pain with Airtable, read the Plus row first, not the Starter one.

The AI layer, and where it stands

The "AI" in the name covers a few features. There is a chatbot builder that lets you train a custom assistant on your own data and drop it on a website as a support or sales agent, a business-intelligence copilot that answers questions about a table and turns the results into charts, an AI writing assistant, and AI-assisted workflow and template generation.

Two things are worth knowing before you lean on this. First, AI usage runs on a message-credit system: the company's pricing notes put a standard query at one credit and a GPT-4 response at twenty, with model training billed separately by character count. Second, AITable's own pricing page still frames the AI features as being in a testing phase whose costs may change, and the models it names are GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 rather than anything more recent. The AI works, but it reads like a layer that has not been refreshed in a while, so treat it as a useful add-on rather than the reason to buy.

Who it suits

The clearest fit is a small-to-mid team that likes Airtable's model but not its per-seat bill, and wants the option of self-hosting the underlying engine for control or compliance reasons. Reviews on AppSumo, where AITable was offered as a deal, line up with that: users there call it a fast, cost-effective Airtable alternative and single out the permissions, organization, and member-management features as genuinely enterprise-grade.

It is a weaker match if your workflows depend on Airtable's scripting. The same third-party reviews note that AITable lacks an equivalent of Airtable's Extensions and Scripts module, and that its template library is small with no community contributing to it. If you rely on a marketplace of ready-made blocks and templates, that gap will be felt quickly.

Honest considerations

Beyond the missing scripting layer and thin templates, the signal worth weighing is momentum. The open-source repository is still receiving commits (the most recent landed in September 2026), but the site still carries a 2023 company copyright and those older model names. None of that breaks the product, and the hosted service is live and functional today, but for something you would build core workflows on it is fair to check that the hosted product is keeping pace with the engine before you commit. Independent discussion is also sparse: unlike the broader open-source-Airtable category, which has generated plenty of debate, AITable.ai itself has left little third-party footprint beyond the AppSumo reviews, so you are relying more on a trial than on a crowd of opinions.

Overall this lands at a 4 out of 5 for teams that want Airtable's structure at a fraction of the seat cost and value an open-source core, with the honest caveat that you should confirm the roadmap is still moving before you standardize on it. Spin up the free plan, rebuild one real workflow in it, and you will know within an afternoon whether the trade-offs fit.
