Huntr review: one home for your job hunt and your resume

A serious job search turns into a mess of browser tabs fast: a spreadsheet of applications, a folder of resume versions, three half-written cover letters, and a vague memory of which recruiter you were supposed to email back. Huntr's pitch is that all of that belongs in one place. It started back in 2017 as a simple kanban board for tracking job applications, and it has grown into a toolkit that now handles the resume writing and tailoring too.

That long history matters more than it sounds. A lot of AI resume tools appeared in 2023 and will be gone by 2027; Huntr has been iterating on the same core problem for years. Its early Hacker News launches were a kanban job board (2017) and a mobile job-search browser (2018), and only later, in 2024, did it add a GPT-based resume builder. What Huntr actually is

At the center is a job tracker built like a kanban board: columns for wishlist, applied, interview, offer, and so on, with a card per role. A Chrome extension called the Job Clipper saves a posting from most job sites in one click, so the job details, company, and link land on a card without copy-paste. Around that tracker sit the newer pieces: an AI resume builder, job-tailored resumes that rewrite your experience against a specific posting, a resume checker, AI cover letters, plus a contact tracker and an interview tracker for the follow-up work that usually falls through the cracks.

The important thing to understand is what Huntr is not. It does not apply to jobs for you. Unlike the auto-apply tools that blast your resume at hundreds of listings, Huntr's autofill extension speeds up forms you are already filling out yourself. You stay in the loop on every application. Depending on how you feel about mass auto-apply, that is either a limitation or the entire point.

What you get without paying

Huntr's free plan is more generous than most tools in this category, which is a large part of why it gets recommended.

On the free tier you can build unlimited base resumes, export them to PDF at no cost, use every resume template, and track up to 100 jobs with document uploads. A few of the AI extras are even open with no signup at all: the bullet-point generator, the summary generator, and a job-keyword finder are usable straight from the product page to try before you commit.

The catch is where the free plan draws its line. Job-tailored resumes, the feature that rewrites and keyword-matches your resume to a specific posting, are capped at two on the free plan, along with two application packets. If your search is small, that may be all you need. If you are applying widely and want a tailored version for each role, you will hit that ceiling quickly, which is exactly the nudge toward Pro.

The resume tools in practice

The resume builder is the part that has had the most work lately. It produces ATS-friendly resumes and leans on AI for the tedious parts: turning a job title into suggested bullet points, drafting a summary, and pulling the keywords out of a job description so you can work them in.

Job tailoring is the headline feature and the clearest reason to pay. You paste in a posting, and Huntr matches your resume against its requirements, flags missing keywords, and helps you rework bullets to fit. Recruiters increasingly run resumes through automated screening, so getting the language aligned to the posting is practical rather than cosmetic. Independent reviewers tend to single out the depth of these tailoring tools as Huntr's real strength, above the tracker it started as.

What it costs, and whether Pro is worth it

Pro is a flat 40 dollars a month if you pay monthly. Committing longer brings it down: about 30 dollars a month billed quarterly (90 dollars for three months) or roughly 27 dollars a month billed every six months (160 dollars). Pro removes the caps, giving you unlimited job-tailored resumes, unlimited AI generations, unlimited cover letters, and advanced resume scoring and job matching.

Whether that is worth it depends on how you value your time against a real but temporary cost. Forty dollars a month is not cheap for what is, at bottom, organization and writing software, and a couple of reviews make that point plainly. But a job search is usually a matter of weeks or a few months, not a standing subscription, and one or two extra interviews from better-tailored resumes pays for it many times over. The trap to avoid is paying for Pro and then leaving the subscription running long after you have landed the job.

Things to weigh before you commit

The most common complaint is not about quality but density. There are a lot of features here, and the interface can feel busy before you have even started a resume. If you want a single-purpose resume maker, Huntr will feel like more than you asked for. If you want the tracker and the resume tools to talk to each other, that breadth is the reason to choose it.

Two other honest caveats. First, it is not an auto-apply service, so if your goal is to automate applying entirely, this is the wrong tool. Second, the AI writes a solid first draft, but it is still a first draft: the specific outcomes, numbers, and details that make a resume convincing have to come from you.

Start on the free plan, run a real application or two through it, and upgrade only if the tailoring limits get in your way.
